I strongly encourage you to do most of your work in a statistical programming language like R, Matlab, or Gauss.
Fundamentals of Demographic Analysis: Concepts, Measures and Methods
Most of the coding examples in this class will be in R, so it will be easiest for you to work in R unless you have excellent skills in another language. If there is sufficient interest, we can offer a tutorial on using the R programming language early in the quarter. I encourage you to work in a team of two on this project. You will present your poster at a poster session during finals week. The poster session will be a joint event with other CSSS and Statistics courses, and will be widely advertised to faculty and graduate students.
A one paragraph description of your project will be due during week 6. If you don't already have a data set in mind, start early locating one. CSSCR has a data consultant who can help identify and procure relevant data sets. CSDE may be a useful resource as well. Feel free to discuss other sources of demographic data with me. It helps us in the collection, analysis and presentation of data.

In this blog post we will try to learn about the two main branches of statistics that is descriptive and inferential statistics. Statistics is concerned with developing and studying different methods for collecting, analyzing and presenting the empirical data. The field of statistics is composed of two broad categories- Descriptive and inferential statistics.
Both of them give us different insights about the data. Before starting with descriptive and inferential statistics let us get the basic idea of population and sample. Population is the group that is targeted to collect the data from.

Population is not necessarily be people rather it could be batch of batteries, measurements of rainfall in an area or a group of people. It is the part of population which is selected randomly for the study.
The sample should be selected such that it represents all the characteristics of the population. The process of selecting the subset from the population is called sampling and the subset selected is called the sample.
